We are a busy stud farm located approx 5k outside on the outskirts of Galway City. The Stud farms comprises of 250 acres of limestone land at old Doughiska and Coshla in Athenry.

We have a mix of sport horses and thoroughbred. We have an outdoor arena, measuring 50 x 50 m and an oval outdoor arena 45 x 15 m. We also have a round lunging pin and a 4 furlong oval gallop. The Accommodation consists of 20 boxes, 20 loose pens, 4 loose yards, 3 all weather stand off pads, 4 stallion boxes and a 10 horse walker.

montero galway 2009Our thoroughbred enterprise was expanded with the successful trading of young horses racing from Point to Point and Racecourse.

In 2008 we expanded our operation and invested in purchasing a stand a high quality stallion for the West of Ireland. In October 2008 Galway Bay Stud along with Alan Robertson purchased MERMUS R from STAL ROELOFS in Holland.

In March 2009 MERMUS R arrived in Ireland to stand at Galway Bay Stud.

During this time Philip McManus opened his new state of the art AI Centre in Rockmount, Claregalway which is located within a 4k from Galway Bay stud. This facility has experienced vetenary surgeons provide 24 hour service. Its facility caters for all mares, for both fresh and frozen insemination.

mermus r 2010 denbosch arenaDuring 2009 MERMUS R  had a very successful first season in Ireland but it wasn’t until his second season in 2010 that people realised the power of his genetics. In February 2010 MERMUS R Keur went to Den Bosch in Holland to be honoured as a Keur Stallion by the KWPN for his outstanding contribution to the breed.

In March 2010 Galway Bay Stud and Alan Robertson purchased Peter Pan which offered an alternative stallion to our breeders. Peter Pan has won Nations Cup’s for Ireland and Italy, he won 5 Star Grand prix’s and also has 5 star offspring. Peter Pan had a career in the sport for 15 years at the highest level internationally.

apalachi 2009 grand nationalIn August 2010 both Mermus R Keur and Peter Pan were both awarded 5 star recognition by the Horse Sport Ireland for their performance and progeny that have jumped and won at international level world wide.

Our flagship horse in thoroughbreds is Black Apalachi, who was purchased as a 3 year old. In 2008 he won the Beechers Chases in Aintree. He has since went on to compete in the Grand National in 2009 and produced his finest moment to be runner up in the 2010 Aintree Grand National.
